For Captain and Fishing Guide Eric Maki, operating Reel Tight Fishing Charters fulfills a life-long passion for fishing. When he designed his fishing charter business,
he poured that passion into providing the best possible boat, equipment and experience for you, his fishing clients.

"When it comes to the boat and the gear I use, everything is top of the line," he said. His passion for fishing demands nothing less.

He first went fishing with family when he was only two years old. Originally from Finland, being on the water and fishing was part of his family's culture. "It's bred into us. It's been a passion of mine since I was a little kid."

As a teenager, he frequently fished for salmon and halibut on B.C.'s west coast. He's lived in several of Vancouver Island's fishing communities, including Port Renfrew and Port Alberni. Thanks to 15 years' experience in Vancouver Island waters, he carries a mental map of where the fish - salmon or halibut - can fe found. Thanks to his meticulous notes, he has the precise GPS references for each location.

It was this experience and ability to pinpoint the location of west coast salmon and halibut that sparked Eric's fishing charter business. He originally started taking family and friends fishing and realized he had a knack for finding fish.

Four years ago he began offering fishing charters, primarily through word-of-mouth and recommendations from satisfied anglers. Over those four years, he estimates clients have come home with catches of salmon, halibut, or cod 90 per cent of the time.

"There's a couple of times we haven't caught fish, usually due to weather conditions. But because I know the area so well and know where the fish can be found at different times of the year, I usually take you directly to the fish."
